Surface pastes/scribing coloured pens
Mohs' hardness scale Mohs' hardness, (Ritz hardness), introduced to mineralogy by F. Mohs 1822 and still the standard and functional method for deter- mining hardness today acc. to ten degrees of hardness, each degree of hardness being represented by a frequently-found mineral. Each mineral classified in this hardness scale (Tab.) can leave a scratch in the previous one, and is itself scratched by the mineral next-higher on the scale. If an unknown mineral, for example, can be marked by apatite (hardness 5), and is still able to scratch fluorite (hardness 4), its degree of hardness lies between 4 and 5. The degrees of hardness for minerals are so large that the direction dependencies of the mine- rals remain immaterial (with the exception of kyanite with the degrees
of hardness 4 and 6 in different directions). Minerals up to hardness 2 can be scratched with a fingernail; up to hardness 4 they can be scratched using a knife, whereas window glass can be scratched by all minerals with a hardness > 6. Bedding-in paste
Application: For inspection of the surface quality. Apply the paste onto the processed parts and rub them against each other. The evenness of the coloured layer provides information on the processing quality.
